I dont give a crap about offensive names, its such bullshit. If i dont like anything i dont look at it(in this case)
Anyone would be able to name their char to anything (execpt extreme cases, religion, sking colour etc)

nor of those names should be unacceptable.

It might have been the sadism name that someone took offence to, but maybe someone took offence to something you did or said to them and used the name report as a way of getting back at you.

That still shouldn't be strong enough argument for a name ban. I mean if "it sounds a bit like" becomes solid ground for bans haven't we just opened the floodgates for any idiot with a chip on his shoulder to ban anyone for no reason other than to be spiteful?

It's a good thing people can't /report skills and npc's we wouldn't have half the skills we do now, you can bet your ass [Masochism] & [Sadist's Signet] wouldn't be here, I'm sure there would be tons of others. It just seems to be a bit rediculous banning players for stuff that's no more harmful than what's already in the game.

/REPORT = FAIL

It opens things up for abuse by others. An alliance member was telling people in AC to go to their guild hall and /REPORT his name as being offensive simply so he could change it. He had several accounts so the temp ban wasn't going to harm him. He also said he has done this before when he wanted to change a character name so it works. The name he wanted /REPORT ed was in NO way offensive. This tells me ANET BOTS are the ones doing the Banning. An ANET employee doesn't even look at the name's being reported. ANET's Bots Do all the work.

I'm not excusing or justifying the ban in the least - heck see my Brawling Headbutt example above - I'm just saying *how* someone could've been offended. It's still bullshit, no excusing that.

But then, there is nothing really offensive about the Kama Sutra (no "r")...it's still used today and is sold in many bookstores and NOT as pornography, but as a guide to sexual pleasure with one partner, same sex...and treats sex like a religious experience...who could be offended by that? As for sadism, it is not always sexual in nature. Many sadists simply derive pleasure from the pain of others...what better descriptor for a necromancer? Even the skills use the term.

My opinion stands..ANet needs to tell more /reporters to bugger off instead of catering to the puritanical, carebear, cotton candy pantywaist, snotty little tattlers. Jeez this puts my panties...uh...jockies in a bunch. Nothing irritates me more that intolerance coupled with ignorance and self-righteousness...grrr...zealots suxors!

True, the whole thing is just frustrating me with how such a powerful tool is being allowed to be misused so blatantly with no accountability from ANet.

Anyone can get anyone else banned but no one can defend accusations that would constitute a ban.

it seems the /report system is rapidly becoming what accusations of being a witch were in Salem; a way to get back at others for personal reasons by masking it behind a 'real' accusation.

I support name banning if the name warrants it. Such as a hateful name or one that is explicit.

None of the names listed look like they warrant a ban.

Perhaps when it's all said and done and you find out which name caused the ban, you can come back and let us all know. That way we aren't speculating when it's found out that the reason was for the character you deleted named "BJs fora dollar".

At the end of the day it's their rules, and you agreed to them.

So, no. They, whoever is giving the temp bans, are not very good at this. But at least people who do have bad names are getting what they deserve. That'd be the only solace one could get from this, though.
